The Portrait Zone
One of my photo subjects was my dog Zella. After our previous dogs died we got cats, then after my brother’s ex girlfriend left she took the cats with her. A few days after that he took me with him to an animal shelter to get a new dog. While looking through the puppies we found Zella staring at us, and we adopted her that day, and she’s been with us ever since.
The place I took all my photos was my backyard. It’s a nice, nature environment that’s very near, and has many bushes and trees that block a lot of the houses. Also since there weren’t too many trees I could get excellent natural lighting without much hassle. One of the things I wish I could do was take a sunset portrait, but the sun sets opposite of my backyard and would have cars and houses in the background taking away the nature aspect I really wanted to keep. One of the pictures i took really captured the backyard-like environment with a firepit in place, and thanks to rule of thirds, comes into focus but it doesn’t dominate the picture.
Some of the major challenges I had while taking pictures of my dog was keeping Zella focused and having her facing forward as much as possible, which was especially hard with my friend coming outside stealing all of Zella’s attention. Another was that Zella has an electric collar and uses outside as her giant bathroom and as such became a poop minefield. Some of the pictures I took I took laying on my stomach, and the whole time I was worried i’d roll over something I didn’t want to. Also, for some reason, my dog knew I was taking pictures and did everything to avoid facing the camera like a baby avoiding being fed by a spoon. I am happy I captured some well-focused pictures of her facing forward.
